There are many definitions for Ego which are easily available online. Now stop don't just go and Google "ego". The subject is so vast that once you start reading about ego written by great thinkers and not so great wiki publishers, you will forget this blog completely. Which I don't want you to do.
For convenience, if you already know about ego" I want you to completely forget for time being about Sigmund Freud's "ego" which is too complex and the spiritual ego of the eastern religions which is too……. "spiritual".
Once again for our convenience, let us give a definition to ego which is completely different from that of Freud's ego and a little different from the spiritual ego. According to Mr Soham (that's me.... my ego rather), ego is that part of your psyche which is the caretaker of your existential position in this concrete jungle. Its main duties are two, one to make you perpetuate your position and two make you to climb the ladder towards higher positions. It continually scans for adversity and opportunity. It continuously is in the "comparing with others" business and makes you restless commanding you to do something or lose your position and forget about the social ladder. For some strange reasons the ego maintains its business only within the boundaries of your social stratum. It hardly thinks about the strata above and below the layer of society you are in. It just wants you to be the fittest animal of the society always climbing to the top. The better you are at this climbing job the happier your ego is with you. Ego don't think about greater heights than your immediate society because it does not like the word "risk". Remember its first duty is to perpetuate your position in the society not to risk it.
Ego reacts to any adversity with the feelings of fear, anxiety, anger, jealousy etc and for any gain in the position it feels happy. The emotion of joy does not belong to ego, it is something which the soul experiences. Ego will never let you to do great things... because of the danger of losing your position. To achieve great things, you need listen to your soul not your ego. Anyone who experienced the realm of soul, would like to stay there and not come back to the kingdom of ego. Once you reach a higher state of consciousness, you will never be happy with the lower states. To reach this higher level of consciousness, you need to get into a state of egolessness where there is no more "comparison business".
In the words of Eckhart Tolle "To become free of the ego is not really a big job but a very small one. All you need to do is be aware of your thoughts and emotions – as they happen. This is not really a 'doing' but an alert 'seeing'. In that sense, it is true that there is nothing you can do to become free of the ego. When that shift happens, which is the shift from thinking to awareness, an intelligence far greater than the ego's cleverness begins to operate in your life. Emotions and even thoughts become depersonalized through awareness. Their impersonal nature is recognized. There is no longer a self in them. They are just human emotions, human thoughts. Your entire personal history, which is ultimately no more than a story, a bundle of thoughts and emotions, becomes of secondary importance and no longer occupies the forefront of your consciousness. It no longer forms the basis for your sense of identity. You are the light of Presence, the awareness that is prior to and deeper than any thoughts and emotions."
